What is Happening to Your Body – Read it Here
Perimenopause usually begins between the ages of 40 and 45, but it can start earlier or later. It’s referenced as the zone of chaos for the highs and lows we experience hormonally. It can last 4 to 8 years or longer. The main hormones at play are estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, and follicular stimulating hormone.
Symptoms include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, breast tenderness, mood swings, fatigue, and vaginal dryness. Some women may experience few or no symptoms at the beginning. Perimenopause doesn’t require treatment, but treatments like hormones, antidepressants, and lifestyle changes can help ease symptoms. Menopause begins 12 months after your last period.
How it Impacts Us as Women and as Female Athletes
- Declining estrogen impacts cortisol levels, making it harder to sleep, recover, and feel balanced
- Estrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining joint health and lubrication, leading to increased stiffness and inflammation
- Estrogen influences fear tolerance- many women experience profound changes in their emotional and mental resilience, including heightened sensitivity to fear and anxiety (making things like heavy weights, advanced gymnastic moves, steep hills scarier despite previous proficiency)
